Having smoke alarms that work can cut your risk of dying in a home fire by more than half, according to the National Fire Protection Association. In recognition of Fire Prevention Week this month, ServiSolutions has compiled a few tips on keeping your smoke alarms at peak performance.
Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, attic to basement, and near each bedroom.
Replace the batteries twice each year. Many people find it helpful to change the batteries when they change their clocks forward and back for daylight savings time.
Replace the entire unit every 10 years. That is their average “shelf life” when they are operating at peak performance.
Use the extension wand on your vacuum – or a tall family member with a dustcloth – to clear any cobwebs and dust bunnies that find a home on your smoke alarms.
Half of all deaths in home fires happen between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Sleep better knowing your smoke alarms are in their best shape to protect your home and family.
