Try These Safety Tips for the Holidays (and all year long)

November 16, 2023

Too many cooks in your kitchen?

Whether prepping for a crowd or making family favorites for a smaller celebration, the holidays give us extra opportunities to cook. All of that hustle and bustle can cause extra distractions, so keep your focus on kitchen safety with these helpful hints.

  • Keep flammable items away from the stovetop, including oven mitts, potholders, dish towels and food packaging. Tie back long hair and avoid loose clothing.
  • Turn pot and pan handles toward the back of the stove so they won’t be easily tipped over or pulled down by small children.
  • Move knives and kitchen gadgets with blades out of reach of small children.
  • Never leave cooking unattended. Set your timer to remind you to check frequently on whatever’s baking or bubbling.
  • Watch out for steam and splashes. It’s not just the oven that’s hot – foods and liquids can burn you too, as well as the serving dishes they’re in.
  • Put hot liquids and foods toward the center of the table, where they are less likely to be knocked over.
  • Clean spills as they happen. Puddles, drips and slick spots become more hazardous with increased traffic in your kitchen. And you probably needed a minute to slow down anyway.
  • Put pets in another room where they won’t be underfoot.
  • Make sure all appliances are turned off before you leave the house and before you turn in for the night.

No one wants to postpone a festive occasion for a trip to urgent care. Following these simple safety tips can help ensure that your celebrations stay injury-free.

ServiSolutions wishes you a safe and delicious holiday season.
